EXCERPTS FROM EVERYTHING | Welcome to the Rest of It

I have put off making a Substack for *years.*

Because somehow writing about the most intimate details of my life to an audience of thousands of people I didn’t know for the first many years of my writing career wasn’t scary, but trying to write something worthy of your inbox is a bigger challenge.

I worried I didn’t have enough to say. I worried I didn’t have a unique enough point of view. I worried the glory days were behind me and nobody was curious about the rest of it anymore. I worried I might crumble under the expectation.

But here I go.

Subscribe to my Substack to see what I make of it.

What I think we’ll be doing there

Chances are, you know my name from a byline on someone else’s website, in someone else’s magazine, or you know my voice from a podcast I made for someone else’s platform. I’m everywhere and nowhere, all at once!

What I’ve learned over the years is that nothing I like fully fits into one container. I like to write about everything from activism to books to movies to politics. I’m passionate about everything that’s wrong in the world and the very specific records in my collection. I’m a little bit amorphous, and that means I have a lot of leftovers — ideas that don’t quite fit in a vertical, feelings that don’t make sense in someone else’s magazine, and the rich material I collect along the way to the stuff that gets published somewhere else.

My Substack is where I want to put the rest of it: The full interviews that shaped my pieces across the Internet. The conversations I wish someone would invite me to host. The personal thoughts I can’t fit anywhere else. And occasionally, reflections on the stuff I did share — glimpses behind my favorite essays and articles, and, maybe, if you’re very, very, nice, excerpts from my secret Tumblr, or photos of the collages I make when I think nobody is looking. This is a space for live conversations, languorous reflections, and snippets from the cutting room floor.

What young girl of the 00’s didn’t dream, after all, of having her own little magazine? And what writer of the 2020’s doesn’t want another microphone?

What I think you can expect

I’m launching with an exciting live conversation (more soon!) about (of course) a feminist book. I’m thinking through which of the dozens of interviews I’ve done in the last few months can stand alone and offer something new. I’m writing up lists of experiences I’m having that I think I have enough to say about.

Expect updates at least one to two times a month. Expect the shape to change without warning. Expect nothing — except a little bit of everything.
