Consulting

Alongside all of her creative endeavors, Carmen has worked consistently as a strategist, event producer, and community-builder—steering editorial, fundraising, press and digital organizing projects and organizing offline and online events for non-profit organizations, electoral campaigns, mission-driven brands, and individual activists and artists.

Through an independent practice, Carmen now works with a range of value-oriented clients to elect feminist candidates, drive social progress and issue awareness, and otherwise upend the kyriarchy. If you’re interested in working with her, reach out!

UNPLANNED PARENTHOOD

Carmen orchestrated the launch of artist Michelle Hartney’s UNPLANNED PARENTHOOD project—a collaborative, textile-based installation exploring historical attacks on women’s reproductive health access and calling for reproductive justice for all. Carmen was able to land exclusive press pieces with feminist outlets and organize digital launch events, and led press and social media outreach on Michelle’s behalf—resulting in hundreds of volunteer sign-ups and amplification from leading reproductive rights organizations like Plan C, ReproAction, and Power to Decide, as well as powerhouses like Gloria Steinem, Amanda de Cadenet, and Hannah Brancato. THE ART OF EQUAL PAY

Carmen worked closely with artist Michele Pred to help re-envision and launch The Art of Equal Pay—a year-long campaign encouraging women artists to raise their rates to increase awareness of the wage gap in visual art. With Carmen’s help, the campaign launch was amplified on social media by organizations and individuals like Gloria Steinem, Sally Kohn, One Fair Wage, the National Museum of Women in the Arts and the National Partnership for Women and Families—and participating artists made $3,100 dollars for COVID-19 relief in one week.

WOMEN’S ACTION FOR NEW DIRECTIONS (WAND)

Carmen created strategic plans for WAND to expand their presence in the popular press and better equip their staff and stakeholders to write about their work in their own voices.

MS. MAGAZINE

Carmen led Ms. through the process of a website redesign and an editorial re-invigoration online—crafting successful digital and editorial strategies as Managing and Consulting Digital Editor to increase reader engagement, expand Ms. membership programs and otherwise bring Ms. into the 21st Century. Carmen fostered relationships with dozens of partner platforms and organizations and recruited as many new contributors and writers—doubling content production during her tenure.

INSTITUTE FOR WOMEN’S POLICY RESEARCH

Carmen cut her teeth during her time at IWPR, stepping up during a time of staff transition to maintain the organization’s media and communications operations. As a Communications Assistant, she helped land press for the organization; designed and wrote press materials, including reports and statements on women’s economic progress; and led a series of social media scaling workshops with the IWPR team.

GLOBAL WOMEN’S RIGHTS AWARDS

Carmen planned and produced the Feminist Majority Foundation’s 15th annual Global Women’s Rights Awards—featuring Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, abortion provders Dr. Ernest and Ona Marshall, Dr. Sima Samar, Amed Khan, and Nazanin Boniadi, among other honorees.

Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID)

Carmen was part of a Feminist Communicators Working Group for AWID, a global, feminist, membership, movement-support organization working to achieve gender justice and women’s human rights worldwide. The group of feminist communicators, strategists, and digital activists were invited to critique, explore, strategize, and vision the ways in which AWID could best communicate and engage with their audiences and communities.

NEW YEAR, NEW JANE

Carmen is the Editorial Director at Jane, where she writes their popular daily and longform monthly newsletters—and beginning in 2021, she was also brought on to produce their large, public digital summits, including two annual New Year, New Jane summits and the 2021 Lift as We Rise Summer Summit. The events featured speakers including Brittany Packnett Cunningham, Marta Kauffman, Eve Rodsky, and Imani Barbarin—and attracted hundreds of participants, a large share of whom later converted to members of the digital community. (After the inaugural event, Jane hit a milestone of 500 members.) As producer, Carmen oversaw planning, promotion, and technical execution of the events.

AN ECONOMY OF OUR OWN

Carmen sits on the Advisory Board for An Economy of Our Own, an alliance of individuals and organizations invested in economic justice, and she also stepped up as a social media coordinator in the wake of COVID-19 to help establish the initiative online, in lieu of an in-person event. Carmen’s work attracted hundreds of new followers to the project’s profiles on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram—and empowered participants to effectively tell others about the work. She has since led their event, email, giving, and social campaigns, which have raised thousands of dollars.

AUTOSTRADDLE

Carmen expanded Autostraddle’s community offerings as the organization’s consulting Community Director—steering dozens of offline meet-up weeks for queer people around the world and creating new online streams of user-generated content by and for members. In her parallel role as Social Media Co-Director, she fostered greater engagement with content across platforms, including a boost in referral traffic by over 500 percent, and expanded participation in Autostraddle’s own social media platform, Autostraddle Social.

HOLLABACK!

When Hollaback! was reorganizing in 2010 and launching its groundbreaking app to track street harassment in real-time, Carmen came on board as a Social Media Consultant to design a strategy for the organization’s new, centralized accounts that spoke for its global community of HB! chapters. She helped launch and promote a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund the app’s development, advised on its design and wrote out unique strategies for every platform for the organization to put into practice in the years to come—reaching millions worldwide.
