Carmen has been building successful and innovative feminist media strategies and campaigns for over a decade—and she can build one to fit your needs.
Alongside all of her creative endeavors, Carmen worked consistently as a communications strategist and community-builder. She steered strategies related to fundraising, community-building, press relations and digital organizing at the Feminist Majority Foundation as Communications Coordinator, overseeing a small team to execute ambitious projects, and also led production of their annual conference for young feminists. She served as Autostraddle’s Community Director—designing and producing digital and physical experiences for queer and trans women that ranged from meet-up weeks to open threads—as well as Social Media Co-Director and regular A-Camp staffer and program lead. She wrote the social media strategy Hollaback! adopted during its global re-launch, served as the Media Organizer for the first-ever SlutWalk in Washington, D.C., and co-authored the viral #EducateCoaches campaign that re-invigorated the contemporary movement to engage athletes in sexual assault prevention.
Carmen now works through an independent practice with a range of value-oriented clients to elect feminist candidates, drive social progress and issue awareness, and otherwise upend the kyriarchy. Carmen is currently curating daily and weekly newsletters as The Jane Club’s Editorial Director, in addition to producing their biannual summits and leading occasional programs; stepping in for The Meteor to produce social media content; and overseeing all digital content and strategies, including the execution of bimonthly Zoom of Our Own webinar, as An Economy of Our Own’s Digital Director. She has worked with clients including artist Michele Pred, author Susan Rubin and organizations like Women’s Action for New Directions (WAND).

Clients & Case Studies
THE ART OF EQUAL PAY CAMPAIGN
Carmen worked closely with artist Michele Pred to help re-envision and launch The Art of Equal Pay—a year-long campaign encouraging women artists to raise their rates to increase awareness of the wage gap in visual art. With Carmen’s help, the campaign launch was amplified on social media by organizations and individuals like Gloria Steinem, Sally Kohn, One Fair Wage, the National Museum of Women in the Arts and the National Partnership for Women and Families—and participating artists made $3,100 dollars for COVID-19 relief in one week. Carmen led Ms. through the process of a website redesign and an editorial re-invigoration online—crafting successful digital and editorial strategies as Managing and Consulting Digital Editor to increase reader engagement, expand Ms. membership programs and otherwise bring Ms. into the 21st Century. Carmen fostered relationships with dozens of partner platforms and organizations and recruited as many new contributors and writers—doubling content production during her tenure.
INSTITUTE FOR WOMEN’S POLICY RESEARCH
Carmen cut her teeth during her time at IWPR, stepping up during a time of staff transition to maintain the organization’s media and communications operations. As a Communications Assistant, she helped land press for the organization; designed and wrote press materials, including reports and statements on women’s economic progress; and led a series of social media scaling workshops with the IWPR team.
AN ECONOMY OF OUR OWN
Carmen sits on the Advisory Board for An Economy of Our Own, an alliance of individuals and organizations invested in economic justice, and she also stepped up as a social media coordinator in the wake of COVID-19 to help establish the initiative online, in lieu of an in-person event. Carmen’s work attracted hundreds of new followers to the project’s profiles on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram—and empowered participants to effectively tell others about the work.
Carmen expanded Autostraddle’s community offerings as the organization’s consulting Community Director—steering dozens of offline meet-up weeks and creating new streams of user-generated content online. In her parallel role as Social Media Co-Director, she fostered greater engagement with content, increased membership and expanded participation in Autostraddle’s own social media platform.
When Hollaback! was reorganizing in 2010 and launching its groundbreaking app to track street harassment in real-time, Carmen came on board as a Social Media Consultant to design a strategy for the organization’s new, centralized accounts that spoke for its global community of HB! chapters. She helped launch and promote a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund the app’s development, advised on its design and wrote out unique strategies for every platform for the organization to put into practice in the years to come—reaching millions worldwide.
